Pillars of the Past

Pillars of the Past by PatrickSmith

Some people wanted to see what my earlier upload 'Exposed', really looked like. This was taken about 15 minutes before Exposed, and is for everyone who is nautically lactose intolerant!

While they were both taken at the same spot, (on an island north of Cancun, Mexico) they turned out quite differently. The waves were so small, it was like being by a lake. I had to wait several minutes for even a small wave to hit the old pier.

A hurricane last October (category 5, direct hit, 220mph gusts) had exposed this pier. The beach used to extend well past the end of the exposed pier. The sand is about 5-10 feet lower than before.

0.2 second exposure @F11 with ND grad 0.9 + 0.6 I had to slightly desaturate the middle part of the sky to get back the detail.

Wow Patrick! Two completely different but equally stunning images.

I do love the way that the sun's rays compliment the lines of the old jetty in this image, radiating as they do from the centre of the frame. The finishing touch is the perfectly timed capture of the small breaking waves.

Thanks Nigel, I had to think of a different way to put it. I know what you mean about art vs. photograph. Sometimes lately I look at a scene and just want to make it into a feeling rather than a photograph. I have a few of these planned for the next couple of months when the rains return.

I love the original incarnation of this image and this too is a stunner. It's not quite as good as the original IMHO as I feel the tranquilty of the extra long exposure of the original really suited the compositon and subject matter. However the sky has fantastic drama and colours in this one, a very close call!!

I've got to be honest here pat and say i like the other version, the smoothness just makes it feel so surreal, although i think the sky and reflections in the ocean are better here.

Thanks for your comments!

Nick (VintageRed), yes it is amazing how much things can change in just a few minutes. And how different a photo can look with just a few adjustments.

Brian, thanks for checking it out. I've seen these photographer websites that are all flash and no content. I just wanted something simple but good looking where people can see my photos. I set up the database first. Then I wrote the HTML and PHP code in in a text editor and uploaded it to the site.

Terry, I used them both on the sky. it was really bright in comparison to the ocean and I wanted detail in both places. A few minutes later, the ocean was picking up more light. It changes really quickly. There are times where I'll invert one ND grad if the beach and sky are bright but the middle areas are darker. And yes, I decided to do different versions just for the reasons you mentioned.

Having missed it had to go back to see what "Exposed" was like. Having done so, I much prefer this for just about everything, sea, sky, actuality. With 'Exposed' was wondering about an ice field in Mexico, until I saw the 30 sec. exposure. You certainly plan things and I admire your dedication. A lesson for all of us there.

Jim, I know what you mean. I learned that it is good to get many versions of the same scene when I happen to be in the right place at the right time. You gave the exact reason. It either hits you or it doesn't. I must admit that I came here 4 times in one short week!

Thanks Helen. You could actually walk quite a ways out past the pier and only be waist deep in water.

Love this image Patrick, in fact I am on holidays in Mexico at present, and the earlier image you posted of the Island just off Cancun of the pier, they have sand bagged up all the wooden strats coming out of the water, making it much less pleasing to the eye than when you captured it. Double drat! Still a lovely island though.
Posted: 4 Oct 2006 - 17:36
Hi Simon, I guess I got there just in time! Sorry to hear that it was sandbagged. I did have to move one out of the way to take these shots. The mornings looking east offer the best opportunities. I have other ones that I havn't posted that are as good as the ones I have posted! I look forward to seeing what you get!

Amazing difference between the shots Patrick. This obvously gives off a much more naturalistic feel, whereas the others are more surreal in effect.

Both are superb shots in their own right, and no doubt appeal to different people in different ways.
