Starfish Point

Starfish Point by PatrickSmith
We had one of the lowest tides of the year, and near sunset too. So I was able to get around the point and onto this deserted beach 20 miles north of San Francisco. I have been to the next beach over probably 100 times in my life and have never been able to get over to this one.
When the tide is this low, all sorts of tidepools and encrusted rocks are exposed that normally are underwater even during a regular low tide.
Fortunately, there was just a little fog which allowed for some nice even light and added depth to the ragged cliffs. So I was able to get several decent shots which I may upload later.

Mo.
Looking forward to seeing more shots from here.

A Beautiful image for sure.....Not sure what is more amazing, the fact that I got in under 10 or how you seem to acquire these beach shots with just the right amount of lighting to make it really stand out.
The Star colours are gorgeous against the rocks or it looks to be lke coral....Very Nice!
The detail in the picture as a whole is exceptional and of course ya gotta Luv the bits of fog far off in the distance....Glad to see you and Terry finally got your clouds.....

Have a nice day,
Suzan

Thanks Chant, I did try to get the water just as it went around the rock, but before it touched the seaweed.
There are lots of them Keith!
Thanks Angie, I'm glad you like more than just the rock - LOL...
Yes Suzan, we did get some clouds a few days ago. I watched an amazing sunset stuck in 22 lanes of traffic (one way) on the approach to the bay bridge. Got nothing by the time I got to my spot on the island. It was clear everywhere yesterday except for this spot on the coast.

Wish this e2 membership would allow to see THE LARGER VERSION ONLY! : (
Another quality image, Patrick!
Jouko

I did that myself Benedict!
Me too Jouko.
Hi Ian, I do have one like that. It would be the ideal place but there was too much glare on the starfish. I had to get them in an area with lower reflected light. I have other variations that I'll upload though.
Paul, there are rocks just to the left of this one that block the big waves, so this rock is relatively sheltered. There are also big cliffs right behind me in this shot. I actually have a shot of a wall full of starfish only. No background, just starfish and blue, green and yellow anemones. Of course I had to get a wave about to hit, but other than that, it is a straight shot.

Walter, I'm glad you noticed. I did try to catch the water just as it wraps around the rock.
Ye John, every square inch of these rocks are encrusted with life.
Hi Dave, I'll experiment with the contrast in back. Maybe I could get a more detail there. The light was very soft at this point. Funny thing is that about 15 minutes later, the fog disappeared and then the light was too harsh!

Superb shot again. The live at this rock is really amazing. Hope you managed to get back before the tide came higher.

Yes Tony, those are mussels of several different species. It is happening today too so I'm going out again right now...

The encrusted boulder comes alive in the larger version and all the rich detail is there to enjoy, the boulder just kisses the horizon and is quite perfect.
All the very best my friend,
Dougie
Nice colours too.
But it could be anywhere in the globe and not specific to the usa and thats what i really like about it!
You could be here in old Blighty LOL
Dave

Martin
yet again
patrick, you really are an inspiration to those of us stuck way away from the coast.
great work
brandi
Dougie, I noticed the same thing. Sometimes the thumbnails look different than the bigger versions.
Sorry you're stuck inland Brandi. I remember how much you wanted to see the coastline.

And here I thought Atlanta was a nightmare??
You should at least know the backroads by now, 'eh?
Yes Suzan, 22 lanes that compress down to 5 in order to cross the bridge. There can be quite a wait! There are no backroads. The mountians limit where you can drive. And you have to go over the bridges to go anywhere, and they all have the same problem with traffic. In this case, I wanted to go over to the island so that was the only way to do it. Atlanta does have that hub bottleneck which is similar.
Later,
Patrick

Maybe you should just move to the island....

Later,
Suzan
gorgeous scene and water movement and starfish to boot!!!
Wow, what a pic!!!

You have a wonderful portfolio. I have just visited your website, which is wonderful, and borrowed a few shots as wallpaper. Thanks.

That wouldn't be a bad idea Suzan. The views are spectacular there. The worst freeway access probably in the entire world though. There is a small ramp in the middle of the bridge and you have to merge instantly into traffic in a 'do or die' sort of way! Or the traffic is not moving at all, which makes merging rather difficult.
Jim, maybe I should saturate it a bit?
That's right Nick, the fog really helps, as we rarely have clouds to work with for about 6 months per year.
Glad you noticed Kris. It was difficult to get it high enough so as not to have the rock block the view of the edge of the beach. And there is a hole in the sand right behind me here.
I hope so Iain! But you never know....
Patrick

Thank you for your kind words.
