We had one of the lowest tides of the year, and near sunset too. So I was able to get around the point and onto this deserted beach 20 miles north of San Francisco. I have been to the next beach over probably 100 times in my life and have never been able to get over to this one.
When the tide is this low, all sorts of tidepools and encrusted rocks are exposed that normally are underwater even during a regular low tide.
Fortunately, there was just a little fog which allowed for some nice even light and added depth to the ragged cliffs. So I was able to get several decent shots which I may upload later.

Hey Patrick,
A Beautiful image for sure.....Not sure what is more amazing, the fact that I got in under 10 or how you seem to acquire these beach shots with just the right amount of lighting to make it really stand out.
The Star colours are gorgeous against the rocks or it looks to be lke coral....Very Nice!
The detail in the picture as a whole is exceptional and of course ya gotta Luv the bits of fog far off in the distance....Glad to see you and Terry finally got your clouds.....

Thanks Chant, I did try to get the water just as it went around the rock, but before it touched the seaweed.
There are lots of them Keith!
Thanks Angie, I'm glad you like more than just the rock - LOL...
Yes Suzan, we did get some clouds a few days ago. I watched an amazing sunset stuck in 22 lanes of traffic (one way) on the approach to the bay bridge. Got nothing by the time I got to my spot on the island. It was clear everywhere yesterday except for this spot on the coast.
Superb shot! Well composed, and that rock really looks amazing. I could probably spend an entire evening taking photographs of it from different angles and distances. Well seen and taken.

What a stupendous find, Patrick. Great detail in the cliffs as well as on the rock, and the fog is a real bonus. I wonder how this would look if the rock were positioned a little further to the left and away from the cliffs. (Not that I'm advocating you push it in that direction.)
Knew this was yours right away , stunning image, how come though you get so many starfish in a beach surf area, they would be washed away first set of waves in Cornwall
I am a 39 year old psychiatric nurse and live near the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Line in South Wales. My photography is influenced by music, reading, art and films and other peoples work though I strive to be original in my approach.
Hi Ian, I do have one like that. It would be the ideal place but there was too much glare on the starfish. I had to get them in an area with lower reflected light. I have other variations that I'll upload though.
Paul, there are rocks just to the left of this one that block the big waves, so this rock is relatively sheltered. There are also big cliffs right behind me in this shot. I actually have a shot of a wall full of starfish only. No background, just starfish and blue, green and yellow anemones. Of course I had to get a wave about to hit, but other than that, it is a straight shot.

Hi Patrick, love the foreground rock and the starfish and all the colours/tones,the reflections, shadows, lighting, swirling water, sea weed, ruggedness, clouds, mist, atmosphere and the whole scene is just perfectly exposed and composed.take care.Ann
This is where I declare my preferences I suspect - I like the general aspect and that rock is a winner - but I feel the shot is a little flat - the light is a bit to blame for that - a little grad burning in ps may bring background into play ??
Walter, I'm glad you noticed. I did try to catch the water just as it wraps around the rock.
Ye John, every square inch of these rocks are encrusted with life.
Hi Dave, I'll experiment with the contrast in back. Maybe I could get a more detail there. The light was very soft at this point. Funny thing is that about 15 minutes later, the fog disappeared and then the light was too harsh!
I have just graduated from the University of St Andrews after spending five years in the quaint coastal town studing for an undergraduate Masters degree in Chemistry. However, I have decided not to give up being a student just yet and will be studying law in Manchester ...
Hi Patrick, love the starfish on the rock...the orange colour was the first thing I noticed! Superb exposure for the water and love the reflections of the cliffs in the wet sand.

Patrick beautiful coplete capture with all the detail from the living organisms on the roch and if you really think about it the tide is very low due to the fact that this rock is sumerged for most of the time for all that is living on it! Patrick would tose be mussels on the rock as well?

When I looked at the thumb for this shot, my first thought was overexposed, the large version proved me to be completely wrong. This is beautifully exposed and a very fine crafted image indeed Patrick. Grand work for the first time on a new beach and working against the tide.
The encrusted boulder comes alive in the larger version and all the rich detail is there to enjoy, the boulder just kisses the horizon and is quite perfect.
All the very best my friend,
Dougie
I love the star fish Patrick and the detail!!
Nice colours too.
But it could be anywhere in the globe and not specific to the usa and thats what i really like about it!

Yes Suzan, 22 lanes that compress down to 5 in order to cross the bridge. There can be quite a wait! There are no backroads. The mountians limit where you can drive. And you have to go over the bridges to go anywhere, and they all have the same problem with traffic. In this case, I wanted to go over to the island so that was the only way to do it. Atlanta does have that hub bottleneck which is similar.
I appreciate you taking the time to look at my images and feel free to leave comments, advice, etc....I am always learning!

Very little colour yet it hits you like the proverbial ton of bricks, due to the composition, distant fog and just being a darn nice scene. Looking forward to seeing some of the others.

Superb detail in the rock and positioning the top of it just below the rock at the cliff base line is very well thought out (no overlaps). Good stuff Pat.

I actually love how the soft colors play together and seem to thrive on the light light, on top of that you have a brilliant comp, its to be expected, Spot on! Click!!!
That wouldn't be a bad idea Suzan. The views are spectacular there. The worst freeway access probably in the entire world though. There is a small ramp in the middle of the bridge and you have to merge instantly into traffic in a 'do or die' sort of way! Or the traffic is not moving at all, which makes merging rather difficult.
Jim, maybe I should saturate it a bit?
That's right Nick, the fog really helps, as we rarely have clouds to work with for about 6 months per year.
Glad you noticed Kris. It was difficult to get it high enough so as not to have the rock block the view of the edge of the beach. And there is a hole in the sand right behind me here.
