This taro field near Hanalei is planted and then flooded with water until the tubers are ready for harvest. I waited for a week for these conditions to appear. And it was looking like I would not get this shot until fortunately everything came together on my last day. A big rain created 7 waterfalls (5 seen here and all seven in another shot I may upload later), which only last an hour or two. But the clouds rarely lift in time to see all of the waterfalls at full force. My other shot shows this.
Once the conditions were right, all I had to do here was wait for the breeze to calm down and for the moon to pop out from behind the clouds.
6 second exposure @F22 with ND grads 0.9 + a hand held 0.6 angled over the bright red clouds in the upper right part of the frame.

Thanks for looking! Wow, off the front page in 11 minutes!
Yes, I had to come all the way to Kauai to see the kind of light you get in the UK. In California it is usually completely clear, or completely cloudy while it rains. Then it clears right back up again. There is very little opportunity to work with light in the same way. Not that I'm going to give up, but it doesn't happen often.
I am very lucky to have the Jurassic coast and the New Forest on my door step...I'm not very good at getting up in the mornings so most of my landscapes are sunsets rather than sunrise and thats the way its going to stay.....

I close my laptop to watch Polar Express (ok I'm a big kid!), and you sneak this one in! Love the pink colour in the clouds and low angle you chose to use.
An inspired low angle allows exceptional foreground detail but without weakening the impact of the distant landscape. True class. I was browsing around your website yesterday (stroppy weather outside, feeling grotty inside) - what a stunning portfolio you have.
I couldn't help noticing that landscape photographers in the US have a particular and very distinctive style which you don't often come across in the work of UK landscape photographers. Perhaps it's simply the fact that you have true wilderness in the US...something we only have on our coastlines...but I'm sure the subject matter isn't the only factor. I'll have to go away and think about it!
Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio.
A wife, mother and radiographer, I find I am spending more and more time on photography and this site and enjoying every minute!
Many thanks to you all for your advice, encouragement and inspiration!

LOL - Jeanie, you are a big kid? I'm glad I was sitting down when I read that because I am in shock!
Thanks Ian. Yes, there is a lot of untouched land out here. Not so much in the immediate San Francisco area since there are 7 million people nearby. But away from the urban area, it is unspoiled. And because parks were set up before there were many people here, even some local coastal areas are unspoiled. And then there is the whole western half of the continent. I've noticed a difference in style too. I'm trying to integrate what I see on EPZ and UK photo books with local photography. They can be very different.

LOL Jouko, I will admit that I was up every morning at 3-5am for a 6:30am sunrise. And then I spent a lot of the day thinking about where to go for the sunset. But I got lots of snorkeling and hiking done during the day. So I managed a good vacation too.
I am an amateur/enthusiast and am still learning.I still enjoy the site,in fact i am still addicted to it.
Everyone i've found is friendly and helpful.Welcome to any new members.
Thankyou for all your help and friendship, you know who you are.
Hi Patrick, this is a dream of a shot, love that sky and the reflection in the water with the tubers, love the volcanoes(i think) and waterfalls coming down, amazing textures and scenery, atmosphere, mood and composition.I hope you had a great trip too.A magical place, now seven waterfalls must be a real sight to behold.Take care.Ann
This is outstanding Patrick. The foreground is so in your face and has a genuine 3D feel. Yet the rest of the image is not over-powered. Everything is balanced perfectly.

I LOVE this!I have viewed this already on your excellent website and I just love the composition. The reflections and the stillness of the moment are superb. This getting up early game is utter madness but hey we all do it..don't we?!
Hello Patrick, like the atmosphere coupled with the twilight colours on the clouds, beautiful...the greenery and still water mixed with the reflecting splendour of the scene pleads your decision for the portrait style of presentation. Impressive.
Doug.

Even later.. but I'm pleased to of seen this! it really is a beautiful image, you could almost pick those plants right out of the frame! Excellent work again Patrick.
Thanks for looking! It has been a busy week, but I'll be browsing around later.
Yes, Ann, the shot with the 7 waterfalls I'll put up later. It is one of my favourites from the vacation.
LOL Jouko, yes 3am for you in the summer is probably the perfect time. But here is it just dark and the trails are very slippery!
Thanks Mark (sneazy), I agree that early morning is the way to go here!
Yes Kin, I needed to hold the extra grad but it was worth it, as the shot I took without it has the top righ tclouds getting blown out a bit.
Thanks Doug. This one definitely needed to be in portrait mode. I would have done a wider version but there were too many trees to the left and right of this scene.
Jennnn? Paddie???? LOL - Have you been talking with that southern belle??
I agree Maddie!
Thanks Sez, that is what I wanted. I got the lens to within 3 feet of the foreground leaves to get that effect.
Patrick everything in this scene is perfect together from the water to the mountain to the clouds enhanced by the grenery and perfectly captured! A picture perfect view into paradise!
