Light at the End of the Pier

Light at the End of the Pier by PatrickSmith

This is my last upload of this year. I just want to thank everyone for teaching me so much about photography. I can't believe how much I've learned in such a short time.

This image was taken about 20 minutes after my last upload 'Under the pier.' Those 20 minutes were spent mostly waiting around for the rain to stop and for the sun to get high enough to illuminate the mountians and sheets of rain across the bay. I was lucky, because about 10 minutes after this was taken the skies cleared and the light was too harsh.

The Hanalei pier points directly towards the mountians often referred to as 'Bali Hai.', named after a song (by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II) from the musical South Pacific (1949 on Broadway, 1958 as a movie). This area resembles the island Tioman, which is the original Bali Hai.

25 second exposure @F20 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.6

And what a way to end 2006 with Patrick.
Really good lead-in lines with the pier, gorgeous light & colours in the sky.
Really like the effect the long exposure has had on the water.
Very nice indeed.

LOL Scotty. It seems like winter is a great time to go for those frosty scenes but it sure looks cold! I'll ahve to think about that one...

You have a good one too Paul. I wanted to include the tip of the penninsula in this one and I didn't want the pier to dominate too much, but rather to point to the light. I do have one from the other side that may address your point. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs.. You may be forcing me to put that other one up!

You should have dragged that log into position here Pat as the lighting and conrast in this shot is better, then you'd have had everything...lol

this is a very nice image as is though.

A beautiful image
Posted: 19 Dec 2006 - 05:23
True Terry, but I think if I had dragged the log over, it might have looked too contrived. This is a 3 mile long stretch of sand with hardly anything but sand all the say around the bay. I was lucky to have a log on the other side. And I didn't want to distract from the light on the mountian and under the pier. It might have been too busy with the log. But who knows!

Thanks Carol!
