Hanalei Bay, Kauai (in the very southwest of Scotland according to Jeanie - LOL) is a 3 mile long perfect crescent of sand surrounded by the worlds rainiest mountains. Over 500 inches of rain drench Mt. Waialeale (2nd mountain from the left) every year and about 100 inches fall on this beach. Waterfalls are often seen in the mountains (5 shown in the big version), but it is usually sunny during the day.
A barrier reef protects this beach so the waves are small. But the ocean swells are large, so every minute or so, the water rushes in way past where my camera was. It is deceiving because you don't see any warning that it is coming, since the waves are small.
There was not a single person on the beach for this sunrise, as there are no hotels on this beach. Paradise!

Yes Jeanie, It was about 25c on this morning. Nice and steamy but not hot yet. I saw the Hawaiian Monk seals on the island too. They are fearless and just sit there as you walk by. There is a huge fine if you are caught disturbing them!
Yes Martin, this is a calmer one than most. I wanted to add a little variety to the PF.
Thanks Keith. Most bruchures just show blue water and sky at mid-day, so maybe I should send this to the Tourist bureau! I have lots more from here, but haven't uploaded them yet.

Really Mike? LOL - any suggestions? Like one with 7 waterfalls? Never mind! It may see the light of day yet but I'm holding out for when I hit a dry spell (like all 6 months of summer here) and need a good upload to get back on track!
This has to be one of my favorites from you, Patrick, and oh boy that's saying something. Although the cloud's reflection in the wet sand is a joy to look at, what really packs a punch is that distant landscape. The way the light plays on the mountains and clouds takes the breath away. What a beauty.
The Personal Stuff:

The luminous quality of the wet sand is quite beautiful, and the waterfalls are so clear in this shot. The light is simply outstanding. A very lovely portion of paradise.

The clouds reflected in the foreground sand save the foreground from being rather devoid of interest (but I guess you knew that!) The water movement has been captured to a T and the mountains with the clouds above are just superb. Love the light on the distant shore too, brings the greens out beautifully.

Hi Patrick,
Isn't this where puff the magic dragon lived.
Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea,in a misty land by the ocean,in a land called Honalee(is how it's pronounced). It was a song about a dragon when i was wee,not that i've got any bigger............lol.
That is a stunning place, the light, shading, beautiful tones and atmosphere. It's like heaven and paradise meeting together.
Take care.Ann

Considering the endless list of comments, let me know if there is one pixel left in the photo that hasn't been commented on yet, and I will be more than happy to comply :o)
For now though, let me just say it looks rather fab
Yes Mr. ChiliMan, the sky really does glow over there. I wish it would here in California but the clouds disappear quickly after storms.
Chant, if you want some great landscapes, I'll show you exactly where to go and when according to the time of year. There were shots I could not get in November that you could get in June because of the angle of the sun at that time.
LOL Koen, nobody has mentioned the log on the left side of the beach. It eventually washed down the beach and I got a good shot of it next to the pier.
Log ? Now you really spoilt it for me :o(
I thought it was a lady sunbathing topless on the beach.
Actually that was the reason why I clicked for the darn pic ;o)
No Doubt this is a great picture. The capture of light in the clouds and their reflection on the wet sand really make this photo. As for composition... would have been tempted to start the frame at the point where the bulk of the clouds start reflecting and included more of the sea. BUT, you were there, I wasn't and I have to trust your judgement on this.
Tony
True Tony, I could have either pointed down a bit or made it extra wide. If I had pointed down I would have chopped off the tops of the middle-sized clouds while gaining their reflections. And if I has made the comp wider, the mountians would have appeard smaller, and I wanted to show the waterfalls. But I do think I experimented with that at the time so I may have to go into the archives to see if there is a shot like that. Thanks for the idea!
I live in Co Down Northern Ireland and have become enthusiastic again about photography since going digital a couple years ago. I would mostly take landscape shots but I have an interest in all types of photography.

I know what you mean Dave. I thought about a more panoramic type of shot, but things were to chaotic to see up one properly. I may try it the next time I go back. There more trees to the left which might make things more evenly balanced. Thanks for letting me know. I guess there are always tradeoffs..
