Pinnacle Rock #1

Pinnacle Rock #1 by PatrickSmith

Point Lobos state park, at the north end of Big Sur just south of Carmel California could keep a photographer busy for months or even years. It is a penninsula that has been sculptured by large Pacific waves over millions of years and the results are stunning. This rock is probably 50 feet tall at high tide.

Details: 0.6 second exposure @F22 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.9

My usual 1/4 second exposure didn't paint the movement of the water quite enough so I had to go longer to show every detail.

I've missed everyone at EPZ while I've been working on my now completed probabilistic SQL data linkage program. I'm still really busy, but perhaps I can upload one per week and browse the the galleries.

LOL Kim. funny you should mention that because I'm trying to get my work into a very fancy gallery and the owner wanted to know how long I'd been doing photography and what my education was. What should I say? "Uh... well I have no photographic education but I've uploaded shots to EPZ for 2 years." Funny thing is, I've had more critique and education here on EPZ than I could have obtained from 10 years of school and normal experience. So, I never tell anybody about myself until after they see the shots! I'm in by the way.

LOL Adrian, well I hope to deliver more punishing blows in the future!

Thanks for your comments!

Funny you should mention that Terry. Just a couple of hours before I was in some of those fancy Carmel art galleries looking at million dollar paintings (literally!) and one grabbed me with a ship being tossed by waves with amazing light going through the scene. I wished I could capture that for real. I'm still wishing, but for now this will do!

It's good to be back amidst all the drama!

I've still not got out and taken any photos.

This is a good 'un to come back with - nice blurring of the waves - enough to suggest movement, but not so much to turn it all to mush.

I'm 59 years old and my photography is purely a hobby and for my own pleasure. Of course if you enjoy it too I'll be delighted, Chris.

Photography had receded into the shadows for a couple of years 'cos of a broken spirit. All that changed on the 5th of August 2006. A trip to the UK in October 2006 got me thinking that instead of being saddled with rolls & rolls of film, why not take the plunge into...

The day I ever find an image of yours just 'good' will be the day hell freezes over. And if that happened, you'd photograph it to perfection, I reckon

Thanks Suzan,

I'm still behind too. It was a good weekend. No clouds so no good shots but I did a very long night exposure with the moonlight that turned out well. I hope all is going well for you!

Fantasitc shot Patrick. The movement of the water around the base of rock is just so expressive and adds a lot of power to this shot. Perfectly judged shutter speed.

Thanks Goggz.

Ben, I'll admit that it took 3 attempts to get the shutter speed right before I could take my real shots. This was a big scene almost in slow motion compared to my other real close-in shots.
