The Heart of La Jolla by PatrickSmith
This is a very wide angle shot of this unusual sandstone rock formation taken at 17mm just after sunset and at high tide. I had to hand hold the ND grad for the entire 1 minute exposure since the filter holder becomes visible at such a wide angle.
LOL - By the way, this is a 100% vegan image. No dairy products were used in the making of this photograph....
65 second exposure @F22 with ND grad 0.9

What a lovely rock Patrick.
What filter system do you use by the way? I don't get any vignetting with my Lee holder (which has two filter slots) even at 17mm.

Thanks for looking! Is EPZ running slow today? The pages are taking a LONG time to load.
LOL Jen, thanks.
Mike, I use Lee filters and a Cokin holder with the usual #3 slot cut off. It works fine for now except at 17 and 18mm. I have no vignetting problems either. Here, the left side was darker at the time so that is fine. I should get those bigger and thinner filters and the extra large holder. I forget what they are called, but it is distracting to hold onto a holder for a minute while watching for large sneaker waves to hit while you are stuck out there not able to move for such a long time.!
Yes Jouko, holding filters is a pain when a wave could strike at any second and you have to run and abandon the long exposure! I need a better system. If the filter taps the side of the lens while you hold it, you can ruin the exposure if it is a few seconds long.

This is a wonderful shot, everythings so...well...smooth. I guess taht happens when you get over a minute!
can I just ask, was the ND just for the sky? And how dark was it when you took the shot? - a minute sees a hugely long exposure time to not come out with a white screen at the end of it!
Absolutely brilliant work

Yes Mike, it is a pain!
LOL - Genese.
Mark, this was after sunset and it was getting dark. The dark part of the grad covered the top right third of the image at a 45 degree angle. Sometimes if it is brighter, I'll put on a circular ND8, or even 2ND8's if I'm not at a wide angle. I can get a 1 minute exposure at mid day with 2 ND8's!

I have the impression that this might be one of those images that people either love...or don't love quite so much as those who do love it! I love it, Patrick - not least because of that wonderfully dominant, centralised rock!

LOL Jouko, I wonder what 10mm would look like on the full frame sensor. Like a fisheye?? my fingers migh tget in the shot even if they were behind the lens!
You're right Kris, I should get the Cokin pros. And then the 16-35 2.8 mk2 for the slightly wider view (and all new filters for the 82mm ring size), and then the new 5D and then.... well, I guess I'll settle for the filters for now!
LOL Ian, so do you love it as much as the people who kinda love it, or just love it almost as much as the people who really love it? I can't decide, so I want to be 'just friends' with it..lol..

This is amazing Patrick, real quality.
I used to have filter trouble but got so fed up that I now use the Lee holder and wide angle adaptor with Cokin Z Pro ND grads. I see this is what you use but I don't get any vignetting with the 17-40, have you got the wide angle Lee adaptor??
I'd be interested to know what tripod you use, it must be a very steady one to get such a crisp rock at 65 sec exposure.

Thanks Joe, Simon and Ned.
LOL adrian, and no animal fat was used in the cooking process too, just about 5% saturation in the raw file in C1pro.
You're right Martin, the thumb is not too impressive, but it does pique the curiosity a bit luckily, or it would get completely passed by.
Mari, I think I just have the P series holder. It has 3 slots and I cut the last one off. I don't get vignetting either. I use a super-lightweight Slick tripod (so I can carry it when I scramble around on the cliffs) and a Manfrotto pistol grip that is somewhat heavy unfortunately but very fast so I can compose it really quickly. Even in a 20x30 print, you can see every grain in the sandstone, so the tripod is very solid, but you'd never guess when you look at it. If I went to an EPZ meetup, I'd probably get lots of laughs about the scrawny looking tripod!

LOL Peter. No, I use only the finest triple filtered soy in these images. I would never cause harm or even any physical stress, of the sort that milking would do to a cow, in order to produce an image. True, not milking a cow can lead to problems as well, but that is beyond the scope of this discussion!

A fantastic shot Patrick, a gorgeous sky, an excellent capture of the texture of the foreground rocks, and I love the sea, it's like a sea of mist.

Thanks Debbie! I don't know how anybody even found this picture in the gallery. The site went dead about 10 minutes after I uploaded this but comments kept creeping in. But I could not make more than about 3 comments myself for about 6 hours.
