Checkerboard approach to Kai Tak by widmeister

A Cathay Pacific Boeing 747-400 making its 47 degree turn at the checkerboard on final approach to runway 13 at Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport. The red and white checkerboard is situated on a hill just over one mile from touchdown.
Another of my photographs in the gallery, of the Korean Air, was taken while I was standing on TOP of the checkerboard.

I would have loved to experienced that! A boeing 747 coming over at almost roof top level. They use a new airport in Hong Kong now don't they?

Yes. The current airport is Chek Lap Kok. This was a mountainous island which they flattened and extended into the sea to 4 times its original size. A big job! It is linked by suspension bridge to Hong Kong Island.
