Inle Lake, Burma again. When the original settlers moved down to the Lake from the North they were refused permission to build on the land, hence they built their dwellings in the Lake itself! Apparently there about 20,000 inhabitants here now. Restrictions have been lifted but dry land comes at a premium and the local villagers have devised a most ingenious way of growing food - floating gardens, kept in place with long sticks. I think this image is straight but shooting from a rocking boat plus the huts are anything but vertical...who knows!! ![]()
Many thanks to Ann (EAS) and all that commented/voted on 'Prohibition' - seems like I got the order of upload incorrect ![]()

The boats serve as good lead-ins in V1 and V3 but V3 has the advantage of human interest, and that will grab my attention every time!
Moira
One of them is my brothers house.................I'm sure of it............![]()

Wowee! just look at those reflections and all of the image sharp and so well detailed
These are excellent Dave, love the detail captured in all 3,
Fred.
What an experience to see all this for yourself, Dave, and even better then bringing home such wonderful images from this far off land.
Three superb images documenting the life and times of the villagers here, and I love V 3 with the to lads in what is just a boat and no more, but seems to serve the purpose.
A real insight into how they live, and I love that title too.
Ronnie.
(PS........gosh, 38 votes and this set has only been posted for 2 hours, but not really surprising........R)
Three nice ones Dave I like V1 with the angle. The huts are a
bit off plum but that gives it originality to the picture with having the boat
as an entrance point. Well done. It has a personality and tells a story.
Well done. WesternRed.
I particularly like V1 and V3. The telephone wires add interest
I am in dream world here,,,
I wish ..............
3 fine captures Dave all clean sharp and bright they are very inventive people for sure

Beautiful captures. I like each one for different reasons - the people in V3, the reflection in V2 and the 'nearly home' feel of V1. The clarity and colour of each is second to none. 'Perfect pictures' I think ![]()
All three have their great merits and I'm not surprised you posted all of them. The colours in V1 are very eyecatching and the forced perspective of the boat really gives some dramatic depth. V2 shows just how rickety the structures are and as Ronnie pointed out, the human interest in V3 probably makes it the best of the bunch, shame one of the lads didn't look into the camera but you can't have everything. I expect like every tourist area, you stop looking at the foreigners, even the really odd-looking ones ![]()

I was telling my daughter just today, that I would live on an island in a house of sticks, don't need anything except food and water, must be my Burmese back-ground. I said to her if a storm knocks down my house, I'll pick up the sticks and re-build. My mother was born in Burma, she lived there during the war and said she only has wonderful childhood memories. She only left because she had an English back-ground and different religion. To stay in Burma, she had to become Buddhist - I guess its lucky she left. I will have to visit some day. Today, my girls and I love Tibetan Buddhism.
Your photo's are wonderful, I like V3 because of the canoe - its my way of thinking.
Quote: You'd only have to watch your young children so they didn't drown.........Sandy
They swim from birth almost
The only accidental death/drowning on record is a tourist!!
Three well taken captures each having it's own attraction ,today v3 for me Dave
John
V1 a great lead Dave, stunning colours and I love the velvet feel of the water, the distorted reflections work well also. Great captures my friend.
Regards
Trev.
What a totally different way of life. A brilliant set of images, Dave, showing how these people live
Looks like a gust of wind would blow down the house in V1! ![]()

This is photo journalism at its best. I think V1 is incredible, love the pov, the little boat, the reflections and the way you have so ably portrayed the homes.
very interesting write up for this excellent report!
A great slice of life Dave! Great light on these two complimentary colours They're talking about having floating houses in the UK as an alternative to being flooded out so often, who knows?
Maggie
Its a long way down to leave a comment Dave !!!!
The composition, green tones and reflections in v1 work best for me - the exposure is spot on and of course the natural distortions are fantastic ![]()

All three very good, but v1 stands out - I must say that they look as if a strong puff of wind would knock them over
Helen .
You've given us a real insight into their way of life in this fascinating set of travel shots.
