I have waited one year to get my first glimpse of this elusive bird and when it did come out of the reeds, the afternoon sun was there to great it head on!

This capture was taken at the Tim Jackson hide in the Leighton Moss RSPB reserve. It was some distance away, so I needed 500mm plus 1.4 converter on my 20D body. The image is also cropped slightly.

Thanks for taking a look.

Thanks Gentlemen. Richard I do appreciate how lucky I have been. Sat next to me in the hide were 2 people who had both waited over 20 years to see the bird, yet alone try to photograph it.

It kept in sight for us for 40 minutes, gradually making its way to the waterside. This was the only shot I got without reeds obstructing its face!

That wasn't by any chance the day they were cutting the reeds about 2 weeks ago was it. I heard about it in the cafe and scampered down with my gear but by the time I got there...guess what..

I've seen bitterns several times at Leighton Moss but never close enough to be able to get a good photograph.

Very nice shot indeed.

Marvellous image! I too am positively green with envy.

I've only ever managed distant digiscoped shots and ropey flight shots at LM, never had one come close but I know plenty who have.

Ditto graywolf's last line, LOL!
