Wasn't planning on going out last night, but got a knock on the door at about 6 and there was Dave raring to go.

First time we'd tried using multiple flashes out in the city, so it's all a bit of a leaning curve.

it's a 580EX 2 on a 5D with a 24-105 lens on, with a 550EX on a tripod off to the right.

it was on ETTL mode with the "ratio" heavily weighted towards the off camera flash, so that the main flash didn't really have much effect at all.

Had a few "comms" issues, as in, the second flash didn't always go off, but its ace to be able to set the flash power of the 550 remotely from the 580.

Ended up using manual flash power as it's a bit more predictable!

But yeah - think this out-door flash stuff my be an amusement for the near future.

Camera:Canon EOS 5D
Lens:24-105
Recording media:RAW (digital)

Think mono would suit it better for me, just get rid of the sodium light tint in the bgnd.

Sounds like you and Dave had a bit of a laugh Ade.
How is Dave anyway, think he's been a bit down lately.
Great image by the way, may of tried a mono version.

He's in good form Mike - think he's actually quite amused by the reception his new "style" is getting, rather than down as some people have assumed.

Done a mono version too Paul and it looks good - the sodium hints at a more "urban" feel. Some of the shots it looks quite red in the background, that's proper evil!

I got about 7 really good shots, those fence things looked the bollocks on some of them.

none of the ones with you behind the fence looked that good though

yeah its a case of play and see what happens ade...
With the high iso some had bad noise and are useless to be fair.

So more light and thoise day time shots we were talking about should do well though..

I like this - a consideration could be to zoom the flash head out some to cut some of the light falling on the gate and isolate the subject some more.

Really nice bit of lighting. I'd be tempted to clone out the white plaques on the wall to the right though - they distracted me a bit.

Nice shot ade .. if you want a tuition session I'm running an urban portrait group shoot in Newcastle on the 8th November covering exactly these type of shots Wink

Adrian, I've no idea what your tech stuff is about (although I'm certain there are those here who will really appreciate the commentary) - all I know is that the outcome is excellent. Keep experimenting!

I really like the approach to this, some night flash can be overpowering in one area, yet here the face is lifted well from the shadows, and there's something about the background with the tungsten tone filtered down to give a dark hue across the rest of the photo. It all goes to subtly concludes a sinister feel of the shot. And then there's the model, that swung it for you! Wink

You sound bitter Dave Wink

We had the same lighting kit, the same opportunities, same location, you've got a better lens than me, a newer camera, my face got photo of the week once too, so it can be used to make an effective shot. And you got an EC with it once over.

Talk about a workman blaming his tools!!!

the pose is down to the the tog, not the model mate. If I'm not stood how you want me to stand, direct me to do something different. Wink

Oddly enough, the next shot where people could see your face only got about 20 clicks Wink

Sure you'll come up with the goods on thursday.....

One to be proud of, quality shot.

Very effective lighting. Many thanks for explaining the set up. I have just got a Metz 60CT1 with Metz 60-40 slave flash, must get out and try something like this.
