Thanks for your comments. I was a bit ambitious from the beginning, I think.

I couldn't move near enough to take a close up shot and the oiginal capture was at maximum zoom (270mm) before the beast flitted off. I couldn't see enough detail through the view finder to know how much detail I had picked up.

The cropping has only served to highlight the limitations of the conditions (and the photographer!).

It's amazing to me that the wings seem to be very clearly defined.
