What's the background? I can't make out what it is, there seems to be some sort of lined texture ...and it's darker between the bird and the branch. Is it a wall?

Very sharp capture Al. Rob's right. On my monitor, there seems to be some vertical lines. Very faint, but there nonetheless.

lovely detail and colour in the bird. looks like youve lightened the bg which has caused the lines (which dont spoil the image) may be worth revisiting the processig as its a great shot with the good use of the diagonal with the perch.lesley

Its a cracking good GSW Alan. Both the bird and the perch are top class. Knowing the high standards you set yourself I am sure the BG will be a bit annoying but lets remind ourselves that this is a shot of a Woodpecker NOT of the BG. A great shot.
