Taken earlier this year in Northern Scotland with a fairly strong wind that kept the chill factor well into the minus figures but with views like this you just forgot how cold it was until fingers were struggling to press the remote shutter release that is Wink

Spectacular. Something I've always wanted to see, but so far missed. The closest I got was when I was on a plane one night and the pilot told us the lights were giving a grand display out the left hand side of the plane. You guessed it - I was sitting on the right hand side! Still it's always good to have something to look forward to, and photos like yours spur me on!

Many thanks Alan, I am soooo going back to Durness this Autumn - there is a chocolate factory close by too Smile

I'm a bit of a saddo and understand a little solar astronomy and while you can never guarantee an auroral event (and the cloudy night that often follows it !), it is still possible to predict a best guess opportunity. The last time I traveled to Durness, it took 14 hours in a Landrover but the aurora was visible on 5 out of the 7 nights we stayed. The good fortune was also down to 7 complex sunspots that had rotated into view Smile

Hi Jeddah,

The Camera and Lens you already know from the description ...

Aperture: F4
Exposure: 19 seconds
ISO 2500
Metering: Pattern
Focal length: 17mm
Exposure bias: 0 step

I could possibly have got away with 25 seconds but without guiding the camera (polar alignment) then the star trails even at 17mm would be evident.

If I was shooting at 200mm then star trails would be visible after 7 seconds exposure time !

Steve

One of the best aurora images I've seen this year, the FG really sets off the colour in the sky.

Incredible image - very well done !!! Superb foreground and colour reflections in the sea too. Would love to see this "in the flesh" - something to look forward to.

For those fortunate to be living in North Scotland, there is an auroral event happening right now !

It is amazing how many aurora's are visible from the UK, it is just being fortunate enough to know when the event is beginning.
