Neon signs are not as common as they used to be. Neon letters have to be made by hand, there is no assembly line for neon. The colors come from several different gases The gases are exposed to very high level electric voltages which cause the gases to glow. Neon has a habit of going out in some letters and not others because the high electric voltages may have dropped and some gases continue to glow, but others do not. As neon gets harder to find, I usually shoot some pictures of the sign to create something that was not intended by the sign makers, abstract art.
Once at a neon show at the Los Angeles county Fair, the neon maker offered to create any letter or alphabetical symbol. Being one of the most annoying people I know, I asked him to create an asterisk. Forty five minutes later, he was still bending hot glass and giving me the dirtiest look I have ever seen.
