The statistics about children in jail shocked me today.
Didn't read the story, but a fantastic image.
yes, it is very shocking! amazing photo, it gives a lot to think of.
Wow! You were very quick from reading an article this morning to producing such a powerful image!
A very dark & deep image, great work.
Shocking stroy but an awsome and very emotive image. An extremely powerfull image.
A hard hitting image, gets you thinking. You've worked this well.
Very poignant ...nicely done K, this could easily bring a tear to my eye if I looked too long
Wow. This is a very powerful image.
Very thought provoking K. Excellent work.
This is outstanding, K. I haven't read the story, but this image speaks volumes and with a powerful voice. Remarkable.
Effective - dark but with great impact...
Fantastic image extremely powerful and emotional, incredible.
A powerful image with a message. I hope it does well for you.
great image and it gats a point across*
A very tought provoking image, The Teddy bear image and the placement of the hands, even without a face you know its a child in there. super image.
You just keep getting better and better. Powerful image K.
Dark and very emotive...could be a poster campaign. Looks technically pretty damn good to me too.
Just had to try a B&W tinker though...
Shockingly good, K
I think another EC coming your way, this is superb K,probably your best yet.
Very evocative, stunningly produced.
This is fabulous, K ....
Children in Jail? Can you point me to a story? Anyway this is just superb. The light, the way the hands are holding the stuffed bear, the bars.. very good!
Outstanding. Seems more like photojournalism than manipulated. I think that this is brilliant.
Been back a couple of times for another look - so thought-provoking and also technically very, very good.
Great concept and wondeful image, good luck, looks a winner.
Nice presented photo, that has a good story!
Very powerful image, super work.
vgreat discomforting work
Very cleverly done. Powerful image.
Agree with above - very powerful and well brought together. The dirty teddy detail is very well done.
Woah, great stuff K. Quite a divergence for you. Well done. PAul
Morning K, seems we are all going out on a little re direction of late. What can I say other than this is one very professional powerful piece of work. As an area I frequent often for my stock supply to the Science Photo Library I can say this would be an image that would sell and sell for editorial requirements, the reason its powerful image hits home without crossing any taste barriers and gets you thinking. On a personal point this is one step your creative juices should explore more. I often watch the TV or read an article which makes my blood boil and often seem at a loss for what I can do, photography or art will often as they say, say more than a thousand words.
One of your most outstanding photos K.
Take care Luv Victor xx
Really excellent, let me give a very well deserved 50.
I think this is just outstandingly superb. Victor has summed it up completely. This image speaks volumes, far more than words or any story or article ever could. Nik
Blimey! Thanks everyone for all your comments, to be honest I never really expected this to do well. It had 30 odd views in the first few minutes but no comments so thought something was wrong with it. I have entered into this months comp as it was an idea I had for the theme a couple of days ago, only had chance to do something about it yesterday and alot of PS work was involved because my camera is faulty I believe now so to do straight photography is going to be very difficult. Some bits of information I picked up on the internet for a bit of background on the picture shocked me and the more I read about children in prison the more I've convinced the system is failing, and even more likely that the failure is happening before they reach the courts. 8500 more crimes a year committed by young ex-prisoners. Since 1990 29 children have died in UK prisons, 28 hanged themselves and one died while being restrained. Of 1766 women surveyed by the Home Office 1082 were mothers of chidren under 18. Children are reported to have a variety of serious emotional and behavourial problems when separated from their mothers.
Women prisoners are more likely to be young and single, over half female prisoners are teenagers with their first child. Children born to women in prison are taken away when the child reaches 9 months old if no access to a Mother and Baby unit is allowed.
Mothers-to-be are not told until 2 weeks before the birth whether they can keep their child leading to emotional detachment. I've this in the comp entry too but there is a whole lot more I could say - I never ever realised the scale of the situation until now. Special thanks for Victor too, you always seem to know which way I should be heading Thanks again everyone. K.
Excellent image and beautifully handled.
your very best ...... EVER...... numero uno .... should be an EC just so more people can see this powerful work
Excellent stuff, so moody, you've done fantastic job here. Well done K.
If this don't get an EC/POTW when Pete comes back, I think I will personally kick him up the arse!
Thought provoking, powerful and could easily be used by any of the child charities. Not an image I think I will forget easily. Congratulations K on this superlative piece of work!
LOL@Ade, thanks everyone for all your lovely comments, each and every one is appreciated, thanks to to all those who clicked but didnt comment, I appreciate it. K.
my respect. there-s not much i can say (looking at all the comments above)... just: i am deeply moved and i hope i will see many more like this.
Great treatment, great impact. Well done.
Excellent stuff - powerful message.
Well, that's this month's competition won.
stunning a very powerful image. it say's it all sandyb
Thanks very much everyone K.
This is brilliant K, how/where did you get the bars?
Thanks Ian, I got Ryan to hold onto a pole but it was shiny and not at all suitable so I then took an image of a piece of rust I had and sectioned it so that each 'pole' was different, use the burn tool on the edges and placed a highlight in the middle to give the appearance of a curve, adjusted the contrast and brightness and overlaid onto the image.
Thanks for the explanation K!
Thanks again Ian and no problem Patrick
Wow. Tremendous impact. Great idea. Ali.
Fantastic piece of photography, K, congrats. You have a rare talent.
All been said already K, but just such a powerful image!
Cannot say anymore...except it's very powerful and I am nearly in tears.
Thank you Angie x
Wow.Powerful...............Can't think of anything else to say.Just sopowerful.
Thank you very much everyone, I'm pleased that its got a good reception. K.
A powerful and effective photo-message. Could see this in journals, magazines, book covers, etc. One of your best.
Thank you Arthur, that is very kind. K.
A very strong and powerful image K with the ability to evoke such thought provoking reaction, well done.
Thanks Chris, it seems to have done doesnt it. K.
Isn't he back yet?....Ah well more time to polish me shoe leather!
very powerful image
Fantastic image K. Would be contender for me. First thing I thought of was jail for the 'inside' competition and then ship in a bottle etc etc
Not an easy one though for something different.
Haven't entered! Good luck missus, like this a lot.
Could see it up next for the NSPCC ad campaigns! Very powerful.
I thought this was a journalistic picture of some Island off Japan recently on the news for putting children in jail with adult sex offenders etc. I did not realise that it was the UK. Yes, of course children are harm greiviously when parted from their mother. This is an important picture therefore as it highlights the problem and will find others venues for it's protest too. Well-done
This is stunning, and must be seen by a wider audience.
so strong. so terribly strong. an uppercut of a photo
Thanks everyone for the comments and Pete for the HC. K.
never noticed this on the 31/10, very powerful.
Hi K,excellent manipulation,love the lighting,shading,tones,detail,textures and dof.Astoundingly composed with a very stong message.Take care.Ann
Yes .... OUTSTANDING ..!!!!
wish i could spend more time keeping up with the postings. Alan
Thanks all K.
Excellent image and amazing lighting to my eye.
well captured, and very thought provoking
Very thought provoking jails aren't for kids but in some women's institutes babies are interred with their mother's until a given age!
Thank you all so much. K.
Its me again K
Having just posted a comment o your "Love Hurts" image I then go back to your portfolio and find this one. Another excellent image with a very strong message. Like it very much.
Thanks for your comment on my picture. Will start over.
Thank you both very much. K.
Still keep coming back to this one...so surprised it got an HC not an EC as I think it's one of the most powerful images I've seen here on epz.
Hope all's good in your world K.
Nic thanks, obviously didnt quite hit the spot as far as EC's go, I hoped it might but cant have everything. Alls well here yes, thanks hope you are too. K.

Thank you Simon. K.
Amazing, love it.
Very strong love it
very touchy picture...
Sort of a Dickensian interpretation of the article? An evocative image nevertheless, superbly done.
Thank you, yes a similar interpretation. K.
My sort of photograph ..has everything..childline poster as an alternative,I know its not the original idea..but its so haunting.
Would have loved to have created this.
Thank you for your comment, its very much appreciated. K.
With all the comments already its difficult to say anything that has not been said...so will use one word...magnificent
