The Portsmouth to Isle of Wight ferry is the last commercial hovercraft in the UK I find the machines irresistable. They are the archetypal British invention, quirky, clever, slightly "Keith Robinson", but fascinating. This year is the 100th anniversary of the Sir Christopher Cockerell's (considered the inventor of the modern hovercraft) birth.
