I was moving logs in my garden when I came face to face with this grass snake. I rushed to get my camera and just had time to get a few shots. I have now identified this snake as an Aesculapian Snake (Couleuvre d'Esculape) - one of the longest species of snakes in France known to measure up to 2m. This one measured approx 1m 40. Big fella but totally inoffensive according to my wildlife book.
