I was very happy, to say the least, when this bullfinch flew into a tree, looking onto my garden feed station, where he(?) then spent some time perched on this blossomed twig, feeding on some sunflower seed. He then wiped his beak with a napkin, before allowing me to start photographing him ; )

You've done well with this as they never seem to perch for very long......Nice one.

He's a he — the females aren't red. And it's a fantastic shot: you couldn't have posed him better in a studio

Thank you for the confirmation, and comment.
It does get confusing with the finch family - some of the species have veery plain looking females, and then in contrast, the female goldfinches are almost identical.

Lovely shot and a beautiful comp Andrew, have to say that if you had used a larger depth of field to get all the bird in focus this would probably have made 'Photo of the week'. Not a criticism, just an observation,
Regards,
Geoff.

Thanks Geoff, but I think the bg would have become more noticeable as a camo sheet if I had gone beyond f5.6 @ 400mm. It was starting to show in some other shots. Maybe worth giving the 1.4 extender a go, just to see what happens.
