The lavender gardens at Buckfast Abbey, Devon. They used to keep the National Lavender Collection - at least 3 specimens each of 170 varieties - but they had to give this up due to the high level of work involved.

A sea of purple - just lovely, and I can smell them. I tried lavender here, but I think it just got too hot for them, and yes, they were a bit of work.

Anne you should definitely try again - lavender is a mediterranean herb and thrives in a hot, dusty environment. The one thing it doesn't like is care and attention!!! So don't give it an enriched soil, don't feed it and don't overwater it - it will reward you if you neglect it
