I find this image sad somehow. I think of these great animals begging for food, and how they should be free, roaming the forests in Borneo.
One of the visitors was throwing grapes to them, - you might see a red grape in the hand of the front Orang Utan.
The baby is a boy, belongs to the female on the right. The one far left is also a female, who will be sent to a Zoo in the US to start a breeding programme.
I thought it was unusual to see three together like this, so hope you like it.
Theres a big male in this enclosure who spent the entire time sulking, his face buried into a corner, so I never got a chance to photograph him. Typical man!

There's a lot of sadness in this for me because although zoos are serving a very useful function in preserving the species, this is still lifetime captivity for creatures in whom we can see very recognisable, identifiable, empathisable traits. They are so close to being us.
On the other hand the kid's expression is priceless...

I must admit that these primates look in excellent condition. What saddens me is that wild animals are sent to zoo's where their natural habitat is left behind. Wouldn't it be awesome if enclosures to protect wild life were made arround their natural habitat?
Having said that, I am sure there are many reasons why this is not done and I am not into getting into any debates, just giving my unasked for opinion.
The photograph is excellent, really outstanding work!
Trying to ignore the captivity debate and holding back a lump in the throat, I think this is an incredibly good picture, especially the little one's expression.
Your story is just as good and interesting as the picture. John
I like you think this is a very sad photo...Beautifully taken shot of the family...and superb work

A wonderful shot and you've captured some lovely expressions.
I do visit lots of zoos, but they make an effort to create natural environments; provide stimulation for the animals and often spaces within the enclosure where the animals can hide. But this does sadden me to see; concrete instead of thick vegetation and looking like such a small space - primates in particular have the intelligence to be distressed in these circumstances, so sad but understandable that the male was sulking. ![]()
