On a closer look we saw that 4 of her ducklings had fallen through a grate in the road.
Happily they were retrieved and she waddled back down to the river.. The last image (I think) is the worried father.

It's all very well people going "Oh, so cute" and "Aaah!" but what I want to know is where are Health & Safety? This hazard should have been cordoned off and signed to prevent exactly this kind of incident. Think of the paperwork this near-tragic accident will cause! Enquiries, hearings, witness interviews....oh dear, oh dear.
Someone's head will roll over this, you mark my words.
Very well done, Barbara, for obtaining photgraphic evidence that can be presented to any forthcoming enquiry.
