... trying to answer your question - I can advise you to sharpen your images in any software on your computer.. also try to have VR on especially when light is not that stong.. monopod is also good idea, helps to get steady shots (especially at 300mm) rise ISO up a little bit.. I think somwere from 500 to 800 is very good for that sort of photography if lens is not that bright (ex. f/2.8) also try to take photos on drive/continuous mode then you will have a more chance to get 'lucky' shot.
