Bit of a gamble here, my idea was to emphasize the Carnations variegated edge, using a strong natural back light. Giving a more pastel/softer look as opposed to my normal bold colours.........

I like it but as you say you did lose something but that's how we learn and if you keep on the same medium you only learn little bits of a huge subject, very well done...John

This is a great experiment-- Love the colors and the background-- If it were me, I would look for a stronger focus on the carnation edges somewhere in each image! We shall both work on this idea ! YES!
