I first saw this monument on Bastille Day in 2005. It is part of a major WWII memorial and the day I saw it the beach was populated with French families enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine.
I took this picture the following day, and at the time I was struck by the fact that more soldiers had died on that beach in one day in the war, than were enjoying the sun the day before.
I've returned to the picture many times, trying to recapture the mood of that day. This is the latest attempt.
I cropped it because the sky had aircraft vapour trails which I felt distracted from the image. I like the panoramic effect because it reminds me how vast the beach was in either direction, but I also thought the sky added to the picture b giving you space to contemplate.
