The Maratha Empire of western India emerged in 18th century when the Mughal Empire of the north declined. The Marathas were a powerful force as they were under constant threat from invading Afghans, Siddi pirates, British and Portuguese. The Maratha territory included almost the entire Indian subcontinent.
