I think this documentary photograph of workmen has a workman-like quality to it: in my opinion, the exposure is correct and the focus is sharp thoughout.

In order to improve your journal of photographs of workmen, I would suggest that you get in closer with your camera, perhaps using a wide-angle lens instead of a telephoto zoom, so that the workmen fill the frame, adding impact to the composition.
