I can't decide if I like the rather pointillist effect, or if this looks oversharpened...

It's not over sharpened, but it has had some HDR. Every one to their own interpretation.

Dave -

Thank you: I can see the HDR now, and that is what was creating the look.

I know that this sort of situation defies an exposure solution, so HDR is ideal... I think I've learned quite a lot from looking at this shot.

One added extra: did you create the HDR effect from bracketed exposures, or from a single file?

And a final thought - it's lovely to see water as droplets fro a change! Thanks again - for the explanation, and for the picture.
