This little Robin was mooching food and posed for a series of shots. I got closer and closer until I thought I would try to spook it and get a shot of it flying off. This is the result. I was particularly pleased with the result as I had just changed to my kit lens for some landscape shots when he flew in. So it was not my usual "birding" lens,

Great shot. Got a similar shot with my Ixus ages ago (although my bird looks tiny). Love to try and re-capture it with my 300D, but don't expect to get the chance. At least I know how it can look now!
Wow. Brian i took one of these beauties thismorning, and was so pleased until I downloaded to PC. What a load of toot it was.I am so jealous, lucky you, Fab shot.
Fran
Alan, you can use a digital in many ways but the "cycle time" depends on the size of the buffer memory, shutter speed and data transfer rate among other things. In this case I was firing single shot rather than continuous. As I was using flash in P mode I was firing at 1/60th sec and I guess I was taking one shot / step / sec (roughly). I got around 6 shots off before Robin took flight, so I claim a "timed" shot in this case! :0)
Many thanks David, Alan & kyd, I do appreciate your taking time to comment,
Brian
Brian!!! what a fantastic shot - and well done on the EC!!! hoorayyyyyyyy .. what a corker!
This is just glorious .. the sheen on those wings is superb and the pose just beautiful. You should be very, very proud of this pic -you deserve every bit of praise.
*clicketyclick*!!
Very worthy of an EC. Until they bring out an 'auto timing' function on auto-everything-else cameras, this is the kind of shot that separates point and shoot from skilled photographer.
Dave
Congrats Brian, I normally skip over Robin pictures, but this ones a bit special. I could not help notice that its sharp all over except the tail, which must have been moving somewhat faster than the wings. I will have to look out for this with my local Robin.
Paul
I can't thank you all individually as there are so many comments - but I do appreciate each and every response.
Paul, I hadn't spotted that but think I may know why. On one shot I have of a seagull taking off I noticed that just as they take off there is a powerful downward thrust of the tail feathers. It shows very clearly when they are on the water as a circular hole appears. I think that is what we are seeing here.
Brian
Fabulous shot Brian -colours, detail, lighting - brilliant. Congratulations on your first EC award, very well deserved.

Hi Brian - just saw your comments on my ballet-dancing Robin and had to check this one out and yes, it is a beaut too ! We used the same technique incidentally, except I was 'lucky' enough to have the 200mm hanging off the end so it was a wee bit easier to catch the 'spook' thrown by my good wife !
Respect, Roger (Anconoid)
Stunning shot! Well done! Did you superglue the poor thing's feet to the wood?
best shot iv'e ever seen of a robin Brian. Love the feathers. The back ground colour works great. very well done.
duh I always take ages to catch on but just made this 52 clicks x
You are a rather clever chappie

This is the only shot of a robin I've ever really liked. Excellent.
I have to say this is an excellent capture. Great shot! Sorry it's taken me this long to comment and say congrats on the well deserved EC.
Martin.
Just paid a visit Brian, that's the longest credit I've seen! Add me.
Daphne
Thanks David - the dark background is from the fact that this was shot in shaded woodland, which necessitated fill-in flash, which made the background even darker. It was then a balance between the bird detail and backgound exposure - you can see what won ![]()
Brian
Hi Brian, I've just had a proper look through your portfolio and it's superb. Some really stunning photos! Well done. I love this Robin picture - thoroughly deserving of an EC. *click*
Vicky
Have only just seen this shot Brian and it's taken me a while to scroll to the bottom of the comments. What a superb shot, pin sharp and you've even got him to look at the camera, that takes some doing!! Contratulations on the EC. Click
Joan
I'd give this another if I could, still my favourite ever of a robin. ![]()
Brian,
I've just been browsing through all your excellent work and noticed this beauty had been selected for the editors award.
Rather than click every picture I like, which is the majority, I've clicked this brilliant example to cover all your pictures.
Regards Simon
Simon - thanks from Robin & me
I've been trying to reduce the size of my portfolio but am finding it difficult. Most of the shots represent hard work and remind me of the learning process involved. I'm glad you liked this one though, he is one of my favourites (and not just for the EC)
Brian
Well what can I say...Many congrats on the very well deserved EC.....This shot is definately an award winner...absolutly stunning....The colours, the clarity...just superb...CLICK....Suzie
Superb Brian. This would have been one my choice's for shortlisting.
superb shot. it's now september and still the comments arrive that must say a lot in it's self brilliant work.
That's the shot I would love to capture just better keep going at it then.
Ian.
115 click.see it again at christmas :o)
Thanks for your usual nice comments.
May I say that this picture is very, very nice and interesting. The bird (rouge-gorge, I do not know the name in english) looks like a top model or a French-cancan girl but instead of showing her leg, the bird shows her ... wing. very nice picture.

Brian - absolutely superb, and many congrats on the EC - even if it somewhat belated!! I guess this cropped up about the time things were changing for me and I wasn't paying my daily visits to the site...
Many thanks for your comment on mine yesterday - hope to be spending a bit more time on the site now, but my life is (happily) following new directions...![]()
Brian I can't believe how many times I've looked at this...and just realized I've never commented or clicked! (Slap me down now!) So sorry!
It was posted before I even knew about fab ePz, so perhaps you can forgive me?
I have to say, although it is exceptional, IMHO you have posted work of an equal, if not even higher standard since, (in macro) so I don't understand why it stands alone on the top line.
I'm sure a lot of other people agree with me. The most I can give you is a click.
So here is the biggest click I can give....
CLICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Patricia - you found him at last, that's what counts ![]()
As for ECs, Pete's choice is his perogative. I have given up trying to work out what his criteria are and just post work that I like or think may interest / amuse others.
Thanks for your kind comments though
Brian
THIS IS NOT 'JUST ANOTHER ROBIN' IT IS SPECIAL! 123 clicks, brilliant!
Just thought I'd add that because I can't click it again
