I just missed a Holly Blue so decided to shoot a few flies instead. This one must have know the mood I was in as it raised its front feet in surrender
(actually I tracked it for a short while and fired off a few shots before it decided to wash its face)
Lit using my sigma macro flash, focus in Servo mode AF, hand-held, IS on, f8

Sharp where it needs to be Brian on the eye, don't think the flash has done any favours though, have you tried using a diffuser like one of these HERE they can make all the difference when shooting bugs and other insects like this, especially if you have a Stofen plastic one on the flash underneath.....
Regards.....Ade
Thanks all.
Ade, I agree, its the usual problem that I need to use the ring flash when I'm hand-holding in at minimum focal distance, as I find that the 580EX + diffusers on the camera cause shadows from the lens.
I plan to have a play with putting this gun onto a light-stand and firing it through a 24" softbox, triggering it remotely. Its going to mean a much less free shooting style as I will have to stake out a specific plant or patch and set it up as a "Shooting stage" but I suspect will improve the final results
(I've seen people using the camera in one hand, waving the diffused flash around with the other and getting super results - I ain't clever enough to do this, tried it and usually ended up blinding myself with the flash!
