This pair of Coots have decided to make their nest on a float thingy on our local lake. In version 2 the male Coot can be seen in the water, and keeps very busy all day retrieving bits of the nest, if any fall into the water. He also keeps her supplied with food.

The floats are part of the system that assists in the maintenance of the water cleanliness, and now that this pair has nested on this one it brings to mind the Rescue Buoys that, during World War 2, were moored at points in the English Channel as safety havens for aircraft crews that had to 'ditch' in the Channel, and where they could wait for an Air Sea Rescue Launch to pick them up.

Hope that you find this interesting, and thank you for looking.

Brian

Glad I am not a Coot Brian.
Can't be bothered with all that running about doing all the work for the missus.
Especially as she always buys the cheap soap, and not the more expensive Lifebuoy stuff !!
Mick.

Fascinating Brian, now I know why the saying 'daft as a coot' makes sense! Grin

Well seen and taken Brian. Unusual for cootes to do this.

Lmao at Mikbee's comment Grin

Brian, very interesting info. About both the coots and the WWII Rescue Buoys.

Fantastic reportage, these, and I find them really romantic and sweet too: how these two are making their home in preparation for the young 'uns Smile
