Spring for Garfield Ridge Shelter / Campsite : Appalachian Trail : White Mountains, New Hampshire : July 2005
The water from this spring continues flowing downhill onto the Appalachian Trail which descends steeply north. When I was here two months earlier on Memorial Day Weekend 2005 while hiking the A.T. north to Maine, there was still snow and ice in much of the New Hampshire White Mountains. The descending Appalachian Trail north of this spring, very rocky, was literally a glacier. A father-son couple whom I had met the night before at Greenleaf Hut, Julian and Peyton Williams, were with me. Descending this trail-glacier was a nightmare ; we survived, but I don't ever want to hike a glacier without crampons again.
