It has a sense of motion, and of the fleeting moment. I do agree that the seed head works better than the flower.
Welcome to the site, I see that this is your first upload.

Interesting idea, but a bit vague for me. Not sure how I would improve. As a keen macro photographer, I like to see colour and sharpness and this is more of an exercise in texture and shape, which is not really my thing.

Think I would stay with colour and your lighting and metering is interesting. I think you have done more here than you are telling us as the settings suggest very low light indeed and the metering would struggle on such a subject.

Hello, Rachel, and welcome to EPZ.
I like your chosen subject. The white seedhead looks good against the dark background and has lovely spindly shapes to it.
So, seedhead alone, or seedhead with "soft" flower? For me, there is a vast difference between the sharp delicate contours of the seedhead against the large solid out-of-focus flower. Perhaps it would be better to see less of the flower, so that it doesn't overpower the seedhead so much?
I have done two modifications. For both, I rotated the image clockwise, in order to position the longest spindly parts of the seedheads so that they pointed towards the top left and bottom right corners, essentially placing it diagonally rather than straight up. I used a square format for both.
The right side of your seedhead is quite close to the frame edge, and I have added black canvas to correct that.
In my first modification, I darkened the flower and placed it into the bottom left corner, cropping some of it away.
In my second modification, the flower doesn't feature at all, and I think I prefer it like this.
Pamela.

Hi and thanks very much to all of you for your input. I'm really not sure this shot is worthy of such attention. ..it was just an irresistible opportunity poorly executed by me - I was very taken by the seed caught on the stamen of the flower but rushed the shot as I was at a birthday party and really not supposed to be fiddling around with my camera!! The conversion to b&w just messed around with levels in rg and b but, beyond that the shot is as taken. Thanks again for taking the time to do a crit!
