Another model flying shot from the Midland Area Festival of Flight. This was taken during a team race heat.
Again, a word or two for the uninitiated. In a control line team race three models (usually) are flown in the same circle. Each is operated by a team of two, one pilot, who, of course, flies the model, and one pitman who constitutes the ground crew. When the model lands for refuelling he has to catch it, refill the fuel tank, start the engine and release the model for takeoff. The winning team is the first to complete a set number of laps. This shot shows a pitman releasing his model after a stop, while a race official keeps an eye on the proceedings.
The pitman's essential equipment can all be seen - safety helmet, knee pads, a red finger protector for flicking the propeller to start the engine, a black fingerless glove for the catch and a pressurised fuel bottle strapped to his arm.
