Another palm-sized spider, but this time I found her a most endearing creature. She had fallen into my friend's empty swimming pool and was unable to get out unassisted. Armed with a broom, I eased her onto it and gently lifted her out. She made no attempt to scuttle away, so out came the camera. On closer inspection I found that she was clutching a sac of babies underneath her, which I originally thought was just a small pebble (no glasses on at the time!). She let me kneel down within inches of her and snap away happily, keeping a firm grasp on her precious bundle of kids.

Believe it or not, the next day I found her in the same situation, in the swimming pool, and had to rescue her once more. This time I only managed to get her, minus the babies, onto the brush, and gently placed her at the side of the pool, where she sat and waited until I retrieved her precious load and placed it in front of her. She quickly gathered it up under her belly and made her way away from the pool into the roots of an olive tree, where she stayed for most of the day.

This is a great series of clos-up images Carol with excellent detail. The exposure is also spot on, not easy with the ones taken in sunlight. I really like the catchlights in the eyes.

Aw Carol, these pictures are amazing! I am not really a spider friend, but I try not to harm them, as they are such useful creatures. You get an award for the stunning quality of the images, your courage at taking them and for the good act of saving her and her precious load.

Have a good day,
Johanna

I'm sorry Carol, I still don't find it 'endearing'!!! You have captured it brilliantly, lots of ............ details! As it comes into Autumn the huge black spiders have started to come indoors - I'm still not sure who runs the fastest, me or the spider!

I used to have a pet Tarantulla when i was in the forces in Belize in 89.Fascinating creatures.

I wonder if they get them in Corfu as well.Because my friends wife would run a mile screaming something in Greek.

This is a cracking shot Carol and you should send it up to a magazine.
