I spotted this somewhat large but beautiful spider lurking on the ceiling in my front porch, and thought he would make an ideal subject for the camera. Being almost the size of the palm of my hand, though, I decided to capture him under a glass, on a sheet of paper, where he agreed to sit still for a couple of very quick grab shots before he tried to make his escape into the lounge. I encouraged him onto a stick, hoping to get some outdoor shots of him, but after just one click, he made a dash for my hand, which I was not prepared to accept, so I quickly deposited him onto a geranium outside the front door. I am not normally against handling spiders, but this chappie was just too large for comfort! V.3 is the attempted outdoor image, using the balcony wall as a backdrop, not a good image because my eye was more on the spider than what was in the viewfinder!

Nothing would persuade me to go anywhere near this monster! I can appreciate a good photograph of one though - well caught!

V3 looks as though he is about to pounce......I fully understand the not wanting him on your hand thing.

Great images though and V1 is top notch, those eyes...wow.

I knew this was yours before I opened it!Interesting and marvellous. You did a fabulous job and I like all three images, but I agree with Andy, he looks like he's about to pounce! I'm not bothered at all by spiders and have held tarantulas, but I'm pretty sure that I would think twice before picking up this chap.

Superb start to the day Carol. three great shots.

Three of your very best Carol, superb quality, and detail in abundance. Each image very much worthy of their own air time. It is somewhat difficult to choose a favourite when the quality is so good, so I shall use a pin and opt for number III, simply because I like the environment in which the spider belongs.

Ah yer great big jessie, you'd be no good coming out on shoot with me woman Grin

I was up at Jenny's Meadow the other day while the volunteers were scything down the old meadow growth and one of them came up to me with a spider in his hand to ask me what it was? When I told him, you should have seen his face, it went as white as a sheet and he dropped the spider straight away! It was a False Widow and they can give you a nasty bite........His face though was an absolute picture!
