The tale of two mantids…….I was walking past one of the bougainvillea bushes in my garden yesterday, holding onto a piece of wood for the open fire, when I noticed two mantis on the bougainvillea, looking at each other rather menacingly. I lifted one of them onto the piece of wood, with the idea of taking a couple of images, when he very kindly spread his wings and I managed to grab a few shots. Wondering why he had opened his wings, which I very rarely see, I found that the second mantis had flown over to the piece of wood, and was rapidly advancing towards the first mantis, upon which he viciously attacked him. Version 4, a bad but hurried image, shows them at battle. Having taken the last image, I quickly put my camera down and somehow parted the two of them, before either of them did any long lasting damage. I put one back on the bougainvillea, and the second climbed to the top of the piece of wood, and opened his wings again, believing himself to be the victor of the battle. Version 5 is the winner on his podium, taking a bow!
