Itís strange how we are inclined to ignore what is on our doorstep, and travel further afield with our cameras to take photos. This small, but very beautiful, 16th century monastery lies in the hamlet of Gallos, some 2 kms from my home and in between my village and the town of Rethymnon, overlooking the coastline towards Georgioupolis. I have passed it so many times, but each time the main gates appeared to be locked. However, I hit lucky this time and saw a couple of people inside the gates, and asked if they would mind if I took a look around. One of the guys spoke very good English, he told me I was welcome to browse, and that the monastery was now in the process of being renovated inside, presumably to attract the tourists next year. I hope you enjoy the selection of images taken in this idyllic spot barely a stoneís throw from my home.
