The Red Kite ( milvus milvus )
A most beautiful bird in my view. Not too long ago it was nearly wiped out due to poisoning and hunting by mis informed people but now, thanks to a great conservation effort, can be readily seen particularly in Wales and the Chiltern area of England. I get them regularly over my house in the Reading area.
A great success story.
This bird is a captive bird and can be seen at the Hawk Conservancy at Weyhill.

As ever many many thanks to all those who spared time for c/c's on the Grey Heron. I am most grateful.

Ron, That is a stunning image and as you said a wonderful bird. We are lucky in that we live only a few miles from the Red Kite trail in Dumfries & Galloway. There are now over 80 pairs around the area and the we have a pair nesting less than a mile from the house GrinGrin

Great detail, lovely image, I visit my cousin in the Cotswolds a couple of times a year and Red Kites are prolific there, I have never managed to capture a good image of one yet....

A wonderful image of a very beautiful bird. Tuningen is conservation area for red kites and you see them here quite often. But I never saw one from nearer, only flying above my head. Great detail and wonderful light.

Great shot, as you say a very beautiful bird they were introduced up our way (north east near Gateshead ) about 10 year ago and are often seen all over the Derwent valley
the population is steady not increasing but holding it's own
