A Knapweed Fritillary butterfly settling down for the night, backlit by the setting sun...
Provence 2007
Getting this close and face to face, was truly exhilarating!

So glad to be the 30th voter on this amazing image. The backlighting has brought out all the colours, and the stem coming from the fg is so unusual.
Thanks for all your kind support on this one. It took a while to get noticed, there's something about dark images on this website, people rarely notice them.
It's funny technically this one is ten times more difficult than the previous dragonfly I uploaded, but not quite so popular!
This was taken close to the ground with the sun in my eyes, lying on my back and feet pointed away from the subject, effectively I took this upside down in the most awkward position!
Cheers,
Tim
Great position to be in taking a picture. Why should the camera do all the work? Hope you got bitten by ants and ... yeah ok I'm jealous. It's a terrific shot adn again you have achieved some lovely and different lighting to many standard macro shots so you get 5 * for effort, ingenuity, inspiration, handling the camera and being there...
Well done
Julian
Marvellous light through the wings, beautiful exposure. First class, well done.
