Very sharp and detailed close-up, and as Terry said, the background compliments the subject well. Perhaps a touch more DOF would have its front leg and tips of the antennae in focus.

This is indeed a great photograph and you should be very proud of it.

A little more DoF would be nice but it really doesn't matter too much as the salient parts are in clear and sharp focus and in any event, more DoF might have started to bring som eof the background elements into view which would have been a pity.

Might I suggest you clone or replace the slightly lighter diagonal area to the top right so that it blends in with the rest of the background (can you see where I mean?).

Barrie, normally I would have cloned out that top corner in a flash, but on this occasion I liked the mood that it added, giving the the natural setting of being among the wheat. If I went ahead with the clone it might look a little flat. But your suggestion is certainly an option and well spotted!

I agree with you about the DoF, I like the softer edges obtained using this close up lens combination. While the 100 and 180mm Macros are far superior lenses for edge to edge sharpness, it can be fun playing with the effect of imperfect DoF in a picture.

Cheers,

Tim
