Many thanks for the response to my last upload and for your good wishes. Taking a break from the big clean up, I went into Lagos on Saturday morning to the Farmers Market, where I saw this dear old lady standing at the entrance begging for a few euros and cents, a reality check indeed, and it helped put into perspective, that the flood damage could be cleaned up, soft furnishings laundered, and furniture dried out and things as good as new again, whilst this IS life for this portuguese lady, and her problems can't be so easily rectified.
Used some motion blur to get rid of a very distracting background, the outside of the market is for colourful quilts, blankets, portuguese flags etc, and I thought it distracted somewhat from this womans plight, and didnt convey what I wanted it to. Still not sure this works so it may not stay.

As always Thanks for Looking

A fatastic image full of social questions and meanings. It is a stroke of genius. Not too distant re the subject matter from what we were talking about re the 'migrant mother' image by Dorothea Lange.
Great work and the right choice for the background in my opinion.
I can imagine this would work well in a b&w conversion too.
Excellent work Chant.

A good portrait, but I find the background a bit distracting and not quite in keeping with the main subject. That sounds a bit critical, but I would like to see this again with a different background.

Blur works well. Maybe blurring the other side of her might balance the shot and suggest that as the world around her moves quickly she goes unnoticed and so her world stands still?

Great image.

Super image but I agree about the blur - it is just a bit too much. Andy

The picture of the old lady is terrific but I don't like the background (see we're all diferent) as I would have preferred to have her in context, even if the context were a little blurred. As it is I thought it was a theatre shot with some kind of curtain in the background.

I like the study of the old lady, a very humane, sympathetic treatment of a tricky subject. I'm always wary of pictures of the vulnerable, but this has dignity and distance. I have mixed feelings about the backround, somehow it makes her a display exhibit rather than a part of the world we all live in. I think I want the context, however distracting.

I really like this Chant!. Did you try lens blur as an option too, might just win a few more over to the likes for the background.

Excellent image, although I see what the others are saying about the bg. The detail and processing on the ol lady is very good.

Terrific shot and I think No 2 gives the impression of people rushing by, not stopping to give her a coin. Please accept my user award for No2.

Lovely pose & beautiful colours & detail.

A very poignant shot. I can see both sides of the argument and seeing the two pictures I think they both work very well in different ways.

A wonderful capture Chant. In spite of her circumstances her poise reflects dignity. v2 for me. Somehow she needs to be seen in the context of those who walk by and who do not come near enough to even be in focus

For what it's worth, I like both for different reasons: V2 for the context, but V1 for the fact that it isolates her so completely, therefore reflecting her status in life. fantastic work, chant.

I think this is a great shot. Both work for me, but v1 shades it. Excellent skills.
