Most of my life I've had an inner wish to visit Auschwitz and Birkenau camps, and say my personal prayers. Having just returned, I've looked through my photographs, and as usual found some pleasing ones, the odd one went into the bin, others I've kept for memories of a wonderful trip. But the one that really made me think was this one of the childrens shoes. Our local taxi driver and guide picked us up after visit, and I asked why they'd kept the shoes. He then told us the shoes we saw we're just the last train delivery of poor souls found when the Russian army liberated the camp. Kept there as a memory of the suffering. I quickly did a bit of mental arithmetic, and the sum of people who these camps must have taken, just shook me to the core.

A very sobering image. Thought provoking photo journalism. I've spent quite some time looking at this image, trying to find pairs, looking at the different sizes and all the while thinking of the poor souls who once wore them.
