Hi Robert I can see that two natural light scources left and right could have worked better with a fill light flash from the front, perhaps avoiding that shadow beneath the nose on the left of the shot.
Here is my solution to face shadows, like that, just an idea to try... I do this with gold reflectors left and right and flash from the front. That combo worked very well for me on Chinese New year for a works do last year.

Kind regards Chen.

In the arena

Hi Maureen, just a simple Crit from me, here, is, I would have waited, until the horses head was up, or going up, and a little closer to get a crop in the final image, it is too in the back of the frame, and you have to think about imaging when you have a cheaper cam, as I do with the E620, thinking ahead, can help, and it is just a moment... in clicking thinking about composition, the cam takes a split sec to react to the push of the shutter button, you have to think about that when taking a shot like this. Hope my advice will help next time soon.

Kindest regards Chen.

Hi Willie, I think if you had shot it on Manual it would not have been so blown out on the right, so easy to control for you so why not a manual shot? Chen.
