Having just got my first off camera flash I am trying to get to grips with using it. I have been shooting in manul mode with the flash set to e-ttl. I liked the way my son was illuminated by the flash. and the glow of the backlighting.

He's a lovely lad and this is a sweet photo. I particularly like the way you've got down to his level, which helps draw us into the photo. For a more general audience, I think you need a clearer background (add the toys 'growing out of his side' to Franks list of distractrions) and it might be nice to see a bit more of his face.
On a technical note, there's no backlighting here. Yes, there's a lightbulb in the background but its contribution to the lighting of your son is negligible because your flash is so much more powerful and so much closer. If the bulb was contributing, you'd see the tufts of hair on the top of his head lit up.
Hello, Chris. I like "Say Cheese!" a lot more than this one, for the reasons in my comment. I have commented on a few more of your images, too. I feel that you may have been snapping your son in his halloween costume? Is he taking off his hat? As a record shot, that's fine, but I have to agree with previous comments, especially about the background distractions. Also, I'd like to have seen your son's big eyes instead of those of that big bug. Having eye contact is important. Having him looking at the floor leaves the viewer feeling that he is disinterested and the viewer's own interest is also lost.

Haha I see what you mean now, they were the legs of his spider costume so technically I suppose they were growing out of his side
