Draughty is what I first thought Sarah ! I always presumed they piled into a giant bed with pigs and servants in order to keep warm.
The gaps in the floorboards and under the door would, at least, have saved them from the fumes of the fireplace !
The temptation to include a bedside clock is quite strong.
