This is a Hummingbird Hawk Moth, a summer visitor to the UK, seen here on a red Valerian flower (one of its favourite sources of nectar).

I first noticed this moth – high excitement - in the front garden last week but of course, by the time I returned with the camera the moth had vanished. I kept my eyes open and the next day – same time, same place – there it was again and I managed to get this shot (I have since read that these moths are creatures of habit, and it is not uncommon for them to keep returning to the same flowers, at the same time of day).

Thanks for looking! Comments and criticisms welcomed…

A gorgeous image! Whereabouts did you catch this? I haven't seen a HHM for a couple of years now, hopefully this year they'll come back.

This one was in our garden in Cornwall; I believe they typically migrate across from the continent into the south of England, but this is the only area I have seen them in.

Well captured. Butterfly Conservation are looking for people to record sightings of these, it would help if you went to their website and added yours to the database...

This is truly a fantastic capture, The 1/2000 sec you used at 5.6 was chosen wisely, you have captured the moth very sharply showing enough wing blur to make it an action/nature capture.
Congratulations and Thanks for sharing it here.
