Good morning from a cloudy, cold, wet and windy Cape Town....
Thank you so much for the wonderful response to my buffalo portraits and especially to Alex and Lillian for their UA's, it made my day.
I haven't uploaded a Giraffe yet, so thought this one appropriate for Silly Sunday ....a youngster with a bird sitting on its head. (An oxpecker) She had a nasty scar on her side, but beautiful eyes...
Strangely enough the giraffe's neck has seven vertebrae the same as a human, and can grow to 2 metres. Giraffes neck vertebrae are connected to one another by means of ball-and-socket joints similar to the ones that join a human shoulder and arm. The joint between the neck and the skull enables the giraffe to hold its head almost perpendicular to the ground.
Giraffe cows give birth standing up about 15 months after mating. The calves fall about 1.5 metres at birth and can walk in a few hours from being born.
The average giraffe weigs 1 6oo kg with a height of 5-6 metres. they can run at a speed of 56km/h
Their are 9 subspecies and are distinguished by their markings .
Have a nice SundayGrinGrinGrin

Is that an Ox Pecker (ahem!), Colleen?
Thanks for giving us the gen on giraffes.
Lovely picture.
Are the markings the same both sides?
If not you could say you've seen two of them.

The ox pecker makes this special! In South Luangwa there is a sub species called Thorneycrofts giraffe. The markings don't go below the knee and they're smaller. This is a fine capture Colleen! Smile
