247 (324)There are many smartphone apps to help you process your images on your phone and make them more interesting without transferring them to a desktop or laptop computer. I've tried out a few, and some are really nice. There are some silly and not terribly useful ones, but also a few very good ones.
The other day I came across Camera!, an app that promises to 'awesomize' (American app I'd say, looking at the spelling) your pictures. As long as you avoid in-app purchases, the app is free, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Well, there's an impressive range of effects, filters and frames - especially if you decide to purchase more than just the few standard ones they allow you to use without purchasing more from within the app, but I found it hard to get an effect and frame I liked.
'Awesomizing' looks like going trigger happy with the controls in a photo editor. And something they clearly haven't thought about, is how the frames should work together with the other options. I had chosen a filter (or was it called an effect? can't remember...) by the name of Family Values, which gave the image below a bit of a touristy postcard feel, with saturated colours and emphasis on the sky. But as soon as I tried out the more interesting frames, I found that such choices completely undid choices I had previously made in the filter and the effects ranges. Have a look at the image at the bottom - does that look saturated to you?
Anyway, here are three versions of the image I played with.
From top to bottom:
- The unedited original
- The 'details' version from Snapseed
- And, finally at the bottom: The 'awesomized' and framed version from Camera!
