210 (1129)It's a sad week for those who love (Dutch) windmills, which includes me.
Youths in Burum (Friesland, a northern province of the Netherlands) decided to burn a stack of Bibles (which is a deed which should raise concern anyway, but it gets worse...), and sparks from the fire set the nearby 200 year old windmill alight.
If you don't mind listening to the Dutch commentary, here's the news video, in which you can see the windmill burn and eventually collapse: video.
And here's the windmill in better days: Dutch windmill database.
One less wonderful windmill for me and others to photograph!

So true. We used to have 10,000 windmills in this country, and it was only when there were about a thousand left that the government finally realised what their value was, and started protecting them, and restoring the ones that could economically be restored.
It's so sad when people destroy one through sheer stupidity.
Such a sad story and all to common in any country where vandalism takes it toll. I still remember fondly my time with my family many years ago when we took a trip to see the Windmills at Zaandam. Such a wonderful sight and actually going into one to see mustard and paint being manufactured was fun. Great memories of a wonderful place.
